The entertainment industry is one of the biggest because it has so many different layers (kind of like an onion). It can include movies; fashion, beauty, sports, concerts, TV but one of the most profitable industries include all the tabloids. There are so many different magazines, which is probably why they are such a competitive industry. They are always trying to one up each other by containing “exclusive” stories; and don’t you love how these magazines are strategically placed at every checkout so that you begin to read the stories. (By reading the titles on the front page you are following with their call to action, they want you to read it so you will buy it, this strategy is not only effective but it actually works!) The most popular and reputable magazine is “PEOPLE”; this magazine is not just a gossip magazine they have issues directed towards specific issues and a special one for fashion. They carry the same strategy from the books to the Internet which makes provides consistency for their target market. They are heavily involved in the online world by creating many different social media pages and chat rooms to increase communication and buzz.

PEOPLE has a very interactive website making it very easy for viewers to comment on every hot story, they also feature ‘tweets’ by celebrities and links to other blogs.
Each story has many posts, their viewers enjoy engaging with each other and expressing their opinion, their conversations are very consistent and posts are current.

Dad bought me the Sexiest Man Alive issue of People Magazine to motivate me to get my paper done... He knows me too well.
It is interesting to see that on all their social media accounts they have the small post but they all link back to their main website. They want to entice people to come to their home page, which has all the information; it even includes current celebrity “tweets”. They do optimize on their social media however you are able to see a call to action. In this industry you want to use social media as a teaser, you want to get your viewers intrigued enough to get an online copy of the magazine or to buy it in store (even a subscription).
